Today, we’re gonna get all geeky and stuff. I was fed up with one of the Wal-Marts of hosting and decided to move civies.net to Slice Host. And how liberating it is. Within a few minutes I had a root server instance (Ubuntu Hardy) running. A “hello world” web page was served shortly after.
Slicehost presents a clean, efficient web interface for billing and starting new “slices”, as the Virtual Private Servers are called. Other than that, admin takes place in the shell as it should be. Control panels are just dumb.
So maybe this isn’t so geeky after all. It is about good design and usability. Take a look at the two screen grabs, which would your prefer? Duh.
